Dubya's Pretzle, Janet's Shakes and Faint and Jeb's Tsouris
NMB, Florida February 1, 2002 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. DUBYA'S PRETZLE, JANET'S SHAKES AND FAINT AND JEB'S TSOURIS - ALL FOR NAUGHT I would wish that there were some simple news item that would attract everyone's attention and hold it because it was so important that all the rest of what passes for news would be seen for the dross it is. This is reinforced by something that appeared on page 12A of the Miami Herald this morning. It is a three quarter page ad about "The final Conflict Between Truth and Error" and a question in tiny letters beneath this breath-taking call for attention that asks, " Does anyone Have the Authority to Change God's Law?" What attracted me to this advertisement is the absolute certainty of the authors because they know with an absolute confidence that they follow "The Path to Life - Truth". On the other hand "the Path to Destruction - Truth Mixed With Error. Traditions of Men Replacing the Commandments of God" is what the rest of us mistakenly live by. This is weighty stuff. One might conclude that this is something taken from a tract based on the Quran. At the bottom of the page the source is made clear. "Jesus is coming again very soon! Now is the time to prepare to meet Him in peace." "Final Conflict" would like you to send them a request for a "FREE 158-page book." Then you will know truth. I like confidence. I have seen it work in the strangest places. The most familiar is the confidence of the young who just know they can handle anything. Just hand over the car keys, the bank account and the key to the front door. It is time for you and me to move out and let them take over. The fundamentalists are having a field year or decade or, perhaps, a century. Despite the failure of the Taliban a lot of the so-inclined are convinced the grains of truth are hidden beneath the beards, burkas and brutal suppression of western thought. I find such ads in our local paper refreshing. Any nut with money has the right to be heard AND voted for in the next election if he just shows confidence. Carol's Evaluation: 9 out of 10.
