Several of My Readers Have Suggested
NMB, Florida January 28, 2001 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. SEVERAL OF MY READERS HAVE SUGGESTED In asking me to take them off my list because I write too frequently for them to catch up reading, several of my readers suggested I find some newspaper to be printed in. This is all very fine and good except my readers are my friends and they don't all live in the Miami Herald or the Broward Sun Sentinel areas. This has happened frequently during my career as a freelance journalist. There is an initial interest in what I have to say and then there is silence from my correspondents. I have about a half dozen respondents whom I can depend upon to answer, sometimes negatively and then argue forcefully for some other point I didn't make. I wait for, welcome and enjoy these the best. There is no need for anyone to write anything to me. I happily compose on the computer almost every morning and it just pours out. I wrote originally for my children and these are addressed to my younger son, Hal. He rarely replies. I am lucky to have Carol willing to proofread for me. Unfortunately for me she argues with what I have to say and how I say it rather than look for correctable mistakes. She mostly thinks that I write "real good". I think that I just write and am not interested in being graded although some of our readers look to see what she has to say in the endnote about what I have produced. Here is a question for those who think what I have to say is on a par with what they read in the editorials and letters to the editors of the newspapers they read. Would you be willing to pass on one of my essays with the recommendation that the paper consider printing me? My son Hal, to whom all of these is directed, has sort of promised to construct a second web site for me (I ruined the first one). Then I can post what I write there for an even bigger audience than I have now or would have if printed in newspapers around the country. Thinking aloud is what I do. I can't think how to get a bigger audience. Carol's Evaluation: 10 out of 10.
