Enabling
NMB, Florida January 7, 2002 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. ENABLING You and I are enablers. A few of us who have been through some psychological counseling have learned about the term and the process. We have a member of the family or a close friend who is troubled and we step in to help - but all we do is enable a needy person to be more helpless. We do not know how to handle the problem and the troubled one is adept at enlisting our aid to contribute to maintaining the troubled condition through enabling it and him to continue being sick or troubled. You and I allow ourselves to be manipulated by a sick personality because it is easier to go along with him and support him in his sickness. You and I are enablers. We enable the people who are traffickers in the worst kinds of products to continue to foist them off onto us. They are there to service our needs but they turn it around and we then service THEIR needs. We constitute a pool of potential buyers from whom they choose their victims. We buy from them or ignore them but do not drive them away. We enable their pursuit of our dollars by tolerating them. We are unpatriotic if we do not participate. You and I are enablers. We accept poor treatment by people we elect to provide us with services. After they come to power they do as they please and we let them. We enable their potential to do bad things because we think we are powerless and they are the powerful. It turns out that way because we enable their pronouncements and listen to their interpreters and accept what they say. We enable poor government because we do not really believe we are the government. We THINK we are represented. We think we are helpless and the enabled enable us in that belief. You and I are enablers. We are engulfed with tremendous piles of trash that is supposed to be entertainment. We enable this to continue because we are trained to think there are no alternatives. We have just lost South Florida's only classical music station and the letters in protest were few. When we reviewed the new format we turned the dial to another nothing station or turned it off. We hummed to ourselves rather than listen to trash that children and adolescents pay for. You and I are enablers. Carol's Evaluation:10 out of 10.
