Terror 101
NMB, Florida December 4, 2001 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. TERROR 101 It is sad that people have not learned elementary basics about the two wars of terror that have been launched in this new millennium. Here is an attempt to lay it out so that you Freshmen, just starting out, can understand and deal with the absurdities that have been going on for some time now. 1. Israel was created by a resolution by the United Nations. It was to be one part of a divided land. England abandoned control over the entire area. Israel accepted the decision and began to construct a state. 2. Palestine was created by the same resolution and was the other half of a land now divided. Surrounding Arab States now began to mass armies to drive the Jews (not quite Israelis yet) into the sea. They told the Palestinians, Christians as well as Muslims to leave and get out of the way of invading armies. 3. Israel won this first of several wars and began to consolidate its government and accept immigration by Jews still reeling from the Holocaust in many countries of Europe and other refuges. 4. Refugee camps were set up that remain to this day in bordering Arab countries. Palestinians were not accepted as immigrants in other countries. They were used to demonstrate the evil intent of the Israeli government. Some stayed in Palestine and some commerce began between the two countries residing in the "Holy Land". Israel became an industrialized country and needed labor that was supplied by Palestinians. 5. Yasir Arafat emerged as a leader of the Palestinian opposition to Israel - not the leader of a new country that needed to build from the bottom up. Other Islamic countries supported him with money and arms and the purpose was for him to lead a revolt against Israel and not build a nation by and for Palestinians. 6. Fedayeen from Egypt, incursions by Syrians, the downfall of the shaky shared government in Lebanon by Christians and Muslims and more wars established a pattern of attack by armies and when they were defeated a continued state of terrorism was continued against Israel. Iraq and Iran became the two most antagonistic nations against Israel. 7. The attempts by the U.S. and its Presidents to broker peace between Israel, a democratic nation, and Palestine now led by Arafat in a non-country that had no elections had come near to being completed. The fact is that demands by the rest of the governments of the world (non-Muslim dominated) for Israel to be recognized by the Palestine Authority were never realized. Palestine wanted to own all the land where Israel had established a nation. 8. Israel began to plant "settlements" in Gaza and the West Bank. 9. The people of Palestine began to rise in what has been called the "Intifada". By any other name this is a jihad or crusade against unbelievers. 10. Israel has received qualified support by the United States, the chief ally of Israel. The support is qualified by the realization that it cannot offend the Arab or Muslim world. Muslim nations sit on an ocean of oil. 11. The Arab or Muslim world has repeatedly called for denouncing Zionism as Nazism and using anti-Semitic slogans against Israel. 12. Car bombings, human bombs, sniping, drive-by car shootings and isolated individual murders have characterized the terrorism against Israel by its enemies. Israel has been restrained by the U.S. against a full all-out war against these terrorist attacks. When attacked Israel, was prevented from responding in such a way as to end terrorism within its borders. Israel's policy was instant response to punish the terrorists in their home territory. 13. On September 11, 2001 hijacked passenger airplanes and the biological weapon of anthrax dust delivered by mail attacked the United States. While the Pentagon was a target the main damage was done against innocent civilians in the Twin Towers in New York. The leader of this and other attacks has been identified as Osama bin Laden and his organization Al Queda. He has been given aid and support and shelter by other nations. His war against the United States and Israel has been in the nature of terrorism. 14. The U.S. has responded by declaring war against bin Laden and his host country, Afghanistan. 15. Terrorist attacks against Israel have continued by use of human bombs against civilian targets. 16. Israel has responded by making, if not declaring, war on the Palestinian leadership and its ability to make war. 17. The outcome of all of this is that soldiers have not been killed in a war but terrorists have been killing civilians and counter attacks have killed civilians. Israel has been continuously condemned for defending itself. THIS IS THE END OF TERRORISM 101. Carol's Evaluation: 10 out of 10. Carol says, "Good Lesson!"
