Carol is in the Hospital
NMB, Florida November 21, 2001 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. I'M THINKING OF MY WIFE IN A HOSPITAL BED Carol had both knees replaced yesterday between the hours of 9:00 and 10:45 a.m. We got up at 5 a.m. and were at the hospital about 5:35. The rest of the day was waiting with Carol under sedation and prepped for the operation. And, then afterwards she was sedated some more. Carole Berman came to sit with me and her presence was a treasure I will remember. I needed and appreciated the company and friendship. Carol was delivered to her room 5409 maybe four hours later - I can't exactly remember - and the first words to me were: "You've had a long day." Housekeeping delivered a folding cot and I slept or, I tried to sleep, next to Carol in what was a long, long night. She was asked to wiggle her toes and to put pressure on her knees while flat and she could do this. A trapeze was erected over the bed with a triangle to hold onto to raise her shoulders and put pressure on muscles needing exercise. She was able to do all these things. She is in pain but this is a different kind of pain than what her knees caused before. I was of limited value except for company that she could not appreciate. Sips of water were about all she could tolerate. At the present moment she is not interested in talking on the phone but I am including all the information if you should wish to send your good wishes.
