The Uncertainty Factor
NMB, Florida October 20, 2001 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. THE UNCERTAINTY FACTOR There are some things about which you are uncertain. There are so many factors to consider. For instance: consider the establishment of Religion in the United States. When our country was established and a government with laws instituted, the principle was that this government should "make no laws with respect to the establishment of religion." This was and generally has been interpreted to mean that there is a wall between government and religion. You are free to practice your religion and all religions are equal in that respect. But, our government will not hold up one religion over all the others and impose its practice on all Americans. I read in the NY Times this morning that the Saudi government (which means a State form of Islam, a religion) has been erecting establishments of religion and fostering a form of it taking root in the United States. This is the Wahabism interpretation of what Muhammad preached around 300 years after the birth of Jesus. Saudi Arabia sits on top of a sea of oil and is ruled by a royal family. From what I understand, the Saudi Arabian government is attempting to bring its form of worship to those followers of Islam who live in the United States. Like the Mormon religion, established firmly in Utah and spreading across the world, the Saudi religious leaders must come to an accommodation with the U.S. Constitution. The practices of multiple marriages and the belief and practice of reducing women to a position of inferiority will have to be modified or that religion cannot be practiced here - or, at least, I think so. The thought that the Saudis paid for the training of the Taliban forces with money extracted from us for their oil that we use to fuel our cars is an unsettling one. These same Saudis are of two minds in aiding the U.S. in shutting down the Taliban government that gives aid to the Saudi, Osama bin Laden. My thought is that there should be an awareness of this attempt to bring an official state religion to our country. This smacks of an internal attempt to overthrow our Constitution, values and way of life. WDYT? Carol's Evaluation: 10 out of 10.
