Disasters
NMB, Florida September 11, 2001 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. DISASTERS Disasters usually cannot be described as little or big. A disaster is a disaster as we have come to realize in what has taken place today. I had come back from my bike ride and was sitting with Carol listening and looking at the news on TV when we heard of the plane crashing into the World Trade Center. We were in our bedroom. Where were you? I thought it was a missile because it seemed that it had struck one side of the building and tore out of the other side. The smoke and flames were horrendous. Then, as we watched, we saw the second plane coming towards the Tower, disappeared behind it and then a great gout of flame blew out from behind the first tower - the plane had hit the second tower. We watched again and ultimately saw the first tower collapse. Carol had an appointment and she had to leave. I had to stay to receive a delivery. Then things became confused. I watched while the second tower came crashing down and then the reports about the explosion in the Pentagon. Next I received a frantic call from Carol. She had tripped on a tile in front of the elevator of the building and the First Aid Squad had come and I should come and take her to the Emergency Room at the Hospital that was down the street. I was able to take her and get back in time for the delivery. The rest of the day was a small disaster for us and particularly for Carol. It took nearly six hours in the Emergency Room for her to be seen, received, X-rayed, and then sewn up and bandaged. All the while in the waiting room we watched reruns of the World Trade Center Disaster. She is back home watching the television and eating her first meal of the day - a bowl of soup. I bought her some chocolate pudding and whipped cream to go on top. She can walk but is in a restraining cast and has to put ice on her ankle, knees and shoulder. I cannot imagine the horror of families in the big disaster. I was particularly interested in the need for Official America to back our President in statements every one else made for him - that we are appalled and will make someone pay for this Disaster. I think I know who is responsible. What do you think? Carol's Evaluation: 10 out of 10.
