A Tropical Storm "Waved" at Us
North Miami Beach, FL August 1, 2001 Aaron H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on issues, ideas and reflections on the times. Published now and then, Opinions pro or con are welcome. A TROPICAL STORM FRONT "WAVED" AT US LAST NIGHT I usually do not hear the rain tap, tap, tapping on the windows of our bedroom. Last night, however, a tropical storm (not a hurricane) moved up from the Caribbean and dropped a load of water down on us. It is still dark at 7 a.m. while I write this and looks threatening. So, I won't go out and dodge the puddles on my bike. I'd rather sleep in. It is funny. We refuse to get wet from the rain. I know I would prefer not to get my head wet if I wear my hearing aids. A lady we exercise with in the pool wears one of those jar cover things to protect her $30.00 hair "do". We are going to the pool this morning because the hot water makes it easier to move around for a while. We will get wet, but the water in the pool and the shower before and after is warm. Maybe it is the cold rain that does it. The State of Florida could use a lot more and I would gladly stay in the house to keep dry while it fills up our reservoirs and raises the level of Lake Okekenofee (or is that a lake in a cartoon with a possum hero in it?) I note in the news that there is a rising tide of resistance to the charm of President Bush in the policy making department while his popularity with the fairer voting sex is still about 45%. The slippage, however, worries the Republican policy makers. How come charm is not enough? Bill Clinton can walk in the rain and not get wet - he has chosen a lair in Harlem, NYC where his popularity seems to be high - I wonder why? Can it rain on a parade? It sure can. We have "off-year" elections. Every two years the whole House of Representatives is up for election. The "Republican Revolution" that brought to power a group of young (we want term limits) lawmakers. Led by Rush Limbaugh they made a mockery of government by voters. These Freshmen Congress-people were made angry by Hillary and her commission - our un-elected First Lady lawmaker. Maybe it is time to examine this next election as a protest against the kind of vote counting that brought us W. What do you think? Carol? 7
