Clearly, The Best of Times Were in Other Years
North Miami Beach, FL June 25, 2001 Aaron H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on issues, ideas and reflections on the times. Published now and then, Opinions pro or con are welcome. CLEARLY, THE BEST OF TIMES WERE IN OTHER YEARS We do not live in the best of times although youngsters in the 0-12 years may well argue that since these times are their times they are the best. Let me phrase the argument in this way: Our times suffer with AIDS. The pharmaceutical firms are having great times but people needing their products are losing their savings as well as their lives. Our times have embraced the casino and stock market as the sure way to financial success. Remember when some things could be relied upon? This is the time for Campaign Finance Reform. Will it be in time for the next election? Are the best of our music makers matching the times of the 40's and 50's Broadway and Hollywood musicals and the epoch of Sinatra, Day, Garland or Crosby? Are our times liberated by ERA, NOW and Equal Rights? Economic reality in China today says "Have boy children" to women while the Chinese hinterland practices slavery for the unlucky female. In these times free enterprise is not as free as in its early days. Small businesses founder while big businesses are favored by tax "reform". At the end of WWII we made a serious effort to prosecute war criminals. At the end of the 20th Century we are unable to bring Milosovich, Saddam Hussein and Osam Bin Laden to the bar of justice. Anti-Semitism was exposed by the magnitude of the Holocaust. Today it is alive and doing quite well. The Anti-Israeli forces are telling the world that the few Jews who live in the Middle East are practicing Hitlerism and Nazism and that the Holocaust was a lie. I thought you would want to know these things. What do you think? Carol's Evaluation: 10 out of 10.
