Two Things This Morning
North Miami Beach, FL June 16, 2001 Aaron H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on issues, ideas and reflections on the times. Published now and then, Opinions pro or con are welcome. TWO THINGS THIS MORNING I'm not boasting about it but when I got up at three thirty and couldn't go back to sleep I spent the next two and a half hours at my computer. I thought this would be a propitious time to spend the FLOOZE money my son sent me on the occasion of my last birthday. Now, I have tried to surf the web and the FLOOZE stores but I have been noted for my lack of success. Most of the time I have been afraid to commit myself because I wasn't sure I would have to spend cash on something I really didn't want or need or I could have gotten at a better price somewhere else. Lots of lack of knowledge is a frightening thing. After many false starts I finished my shopping and sent word that I would like three DVD movies from Barnes and Nobles. I came in under the gift amount including shipping so I think I got it right. The thing of it is that the little boxes you have to enter important information into are so literal. You must check and uncheck boxes and, for me, I have to do it over and over to get it right. But it is done and my almost a year ago present is finally ordered. The second thing this morning is one of the articles on the Op Ed page of the New York Times. This is about a stay at home writer who takes care of the kids while his wife brings home the more stable paycheck and the important fringe benefits. He reports himself as an unselfconscious parent with a child in tow and one strapped on his body amidst women shoppers in the market. Now, I have been there. I thank goodness that my children were a good deal older when I took over on a 7/24/365 basis. What he reports is that people still cannot get used to the idea that fathers can be the primary parent and this is o.k. I had the same reaction that he reports when people ask what is wrong when a man does the shopping, trips to the doctor and discussing laundry tips and how to get the floor spotless either by using the squarezee or roundy method - on your knees. I was going to write two separate essays in celebration of these experiences in my life but, hey, I also write a lot and know some of the tricks. Happy Father's Day Dads Everywhere. Carol's Evaluation:10 out of 10.
