Impedimenta
North Miami Beach, FL May 26, 2001 Aaron H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on issues, ideas and reflections on the times. Published now and then, Opinions pro or con are welcome. IMPEDIMENTA I think I have it right. I could have said "impediments" but impedimenta sounds a lot more impressive. And, yes, there have been a lot of things happening in my life that impede my sitting here and doing what I love to do almost every day. This will NOT be a recounting of all the impedimenta that have cluttered up my schedule. I know people who do little. They seem to sit through life and get up and go where other, more energetic types direct, pull or shove them. I think I would like to try that although I know I would not be able to survive without some goal to reach or some problem to solve. One of my personal problems is what to do with my left over energy to deal with puppetry. I had this grandiose idea that I could sell marionettes that had performed before audiences during their active life-times and string them up in glass cases in such a way that they could be manipulated from above while they were protected from little greasy hands on the outside. Of course, the glass cases would have to be cleaned but the puppet inside would be protected to act again and again. And, the strings could not get tangled! I have tried to get my very well placed son in the computer field to set me up with a web-site that would show my wares. He did just that years ago but I was not able to sustain what he had begun. I checked with a carpenter to build the cases (I built the prototype) and found that he was not interested and the prices he gave were unrealistic. Actually, I have only two marionettes left that could be marketed if I had the web-site, if I had two professional cases and if I had the time to push myself and others to build a small company and market the puppets under glass. The impediments here are like impedimenta everywhere. We allow ourselves to be sidetracked. I think you are very much like me in this situation. We all have great ideas but allow the flow of activity created by others to suck us up and we go along with the crowd. Carol's Evaluation: 9.5 out of 10.
