Contradictions Galore
North Miami Beach, FL March 1, 2001 Aaron H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on issues, ideas and reflections on the times. Published now and then, Opinions pro or con are welcome. CONTRADICTIONS GALORE The News is filled with reports from many fronts and if you look closely there are contradictions galore. There is a river of drugs crossing our borders by air, tunnels under the land and across water. But Florida does not serve water to diners in restaurants and you cannot water your lawns or wash your car. Americans assume freedom of speech is a fundamental right but a Catholic theologian (and a Jesuit to boot) is denied the freedom to express deviant beliefs. Our former president, B.C., once surrounded by flacks, aides and security shields is now going it alone - plummeting from pinnacle to where the poop piles. Congress, representing all the people may not, says the Supreme Court, prevent lawyers from representing welfare recipients who have no money to pay their lawyers. The paper clips that free my hands to do other things are made by forced labor in China's prisons. Private religious groups want to use public schools to hold meetings where they would be free to proselytize for their particular dogma. Does "public" mean that the schools may now be open to every group desiring children to adopt their faith? "Rape", an ugly word and act, is now called a crime when committed in war. The victims of rape, women and children fathered by rapists, are persecuted in many countries and the rapists go unpunished. "Fuzzy Math" seems headed to deliver tax relief to the needy 40% of highest paid Americans while many of the lowest poorly paid needy will get no "relief" at all. What do you make of all of this? Carol's Evaluation:10+ out of 10.
