Our Commitment to Support the Arts
North Miami Beach, FL 1-31-2001 Aaron H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on issues, ideas and reflections on the times. Published now and then, Opinions pro or con are welcome. OUR COMMITMENT TO SUPPORT THE ARTS Carol and I have been busy for the last several weeks burning up the road between Fort Lauderdale and, in the opposite direction, to Coconut Grove. We have added the Parker Playhouse (also in Fort Lauderdale) to the Performing Arts Center and the Coconut Grove Playhouse. The Jackie Gleason Theater is available but is located in the heart of Miami where we do not feel too comfortable. So, we have options covered in the major theaters. We are also favored in that there is a good theater in our own town of North Miami Beach where lesser productions than "Broadway" shows or orchestral performances are available. In effect, we have been enjoying the arts far more than when we lived in New Jersey and had access to Broadway. Attending shows off-Broadway in New York City as well as the on Broadway theaters were difficult because of parking and very expensive. We had, of course, a theater in New Brunswick and a Playhouse in Princeton. We found that traveling to all three of these places onerous and difficult. Of course, at times Monmouth University and the little theater groups that abounded offered attractions much closer. Here in the land of sunshine the theater marquees beckon and we come. Our only difficulty at this stage of our lives is trying to find enough matinees. Going to the theater at night is taxing on the eyes and traveling at high speed at any time of the day - and particularly at night - is especially dangerous in Florida, the place where people joust on the highways with several tons of metal under their control. By the way, this is the land where air pollution is taken care of by the winds sweeping in either direction from the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico - so automobiles and trucks reign. It is also the nutty place that did away with automobile inspections and thus the insane populate the roads with menacing wrecks. This does not require a reply. I am tired after returning late last night from Fort Lauderdale where the Cleveland Orchestra led by a gentleman from Jakarta featured a violinist whose reputation was greater than his performance. But, we do support the arts. Carol's Evaluation: 10 out of 10.
