I Think I Think Too Much
North Miami Beach, FL January 3, 2001 Aaron H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on issues, ideas and reflections on the times. Published now and then, Opinions pro or con are welcome. I THINK I THINK TOO MUCH I think I think too much. That is to say I think in unending streams of ideas about issues and reflect continuously about the times in which we live. My friends who throw up their hands (and my wife who expresses herself in verbal opposition) about this proclivity do not understand I have little to say about the forces within that impel me to find a lot to say about a lot that I have said much about before. This thinking too much often interferes with a sound and refreshing sleep. Have you found that there are times when your eyes pop open somewhere in the night and refuse to close again? This happens most every night of my life. I turn over and try to think about something other than what made me wake but it often turns out to be turn about and turn over again and just doesn't work. Sometimes at 4:00 a.m. but more often somewhere around 5:30 I give up and reach for my glasses and then pause at the edge of the bed gathering strength to rise and find my slippers and some clothes. I try to stretch the time until about 6:00 when the papers usually are in front of the front door. I choose the New York Times first and see what is happening in the world and end up on the last pages where the ideas are. Then it happens again and again that I take issue with what is said, but more likely with how it is said and then I try to set the record straight. It is not the pundits' fault that they do not think as I do. And, it is not my fault that I do not agree with what and how the pundits express themselves. It is just that I see things the way I see they are from where I stand and that, of course, rests on the core of my experience. I went to school, took three degrees from Rutgers, taught, am a veteran, and was humbled by marriages and the needs of children. And, so it goes. What is it that makes you think? Carol's Evaluation:9 out of 10. Carol also says: Well Done.
