NO APOLOGIES FOR FLORIDA
You will get no apologies for the recent balloting activities in Florida
from me. I was not responsible. The people who thought up the ballots are
not really responsible. They honestly believed they found the best way for
people to vote. The voters who could not make sense out of the confusion
caused by the ballot design were not responsible. The postmarked late
overseas ballots are not responsible. The small states with their
disproportionate strength in the Electoral College are not at fault. Al
Gore is not at fault for thinking his popular vote lead qualifies him as the
next president. And, George Bush is not at fault for wanting to be
president. The Cuban American voters who have issues with Gore may be
responsible.
In reading the research disclosed by the contretemps throughout the country
in recent weeks it seems that the present situation is not unique. We have
had close and disputed elections before. What makes this one special is the
size of Florida and the internal politics throwing the slim lead to Bush.
