A CAUTIONARY NOTE ABOUT VOTING
This first election in the new millennium needs careful watching. First
there is the overwhelming attention to minutiae by the media. The critical
evaluation not only of what was said, what is being said, what it means but
how the evaluators need evaluation is overload of facts, factoids and the
factors responsible.
I have been interested in how the media has been caught up in hysteria over
the perfect management of the Bush convention. The Gore convention is being
compared to the one just completed and has already been found wanting before
it is even held. The scorecard has already been filled in. The pundits have
pontificated and have turned to shredding each other since the first
convention had so little of substance to comment on.
It needs to be said that the election won't be over until it is over. When
the votes are finally counted and the ridiculous farce of the Electoral
College has its say, then the final evaluation will be in. Until that time,
no matter how much carping, sniping, dumping and comparing elephants to
donkeys, the voter will have his or her say. And, this is the most telling
point - there will be an absence of intelligence and numbers and issues in
the vote. When the heads are counted there will be the number not voting
and the sound of all the feet that walked away from the polls.
This is a cautionary note about voting in the United States in the Year
2000. One should also note that the new president will appoint the next
group of justices to the Supreme Court - a privilege denied the present
occupant of the oval office.
