A Golan Heights Scenario
North Miami Beach, Florida 1-3-2000 Aaron H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on issues, ideas and reflections on the times. Published now and then. Opinions pro or con are welcome. A GOLAN HEIGHTS SCENARIO The negotiations are ongoing about the future of the Golan Heights, a geographical entity seized by Israel after Syria, the former owner, attacked Israel from that position. The plan of Israel's enemies was simply to drive Israel into the Mediterranean Sea. There is an outcry by many nations that Israel was not playing fair in its own defense by appropriating the staging grounds for attacks on her territory. There are some that think that Israel should keep the Golan in order to guarantee her security. So, the negotiations between Israel and Syria are being monitored and supported by the United States in West Virginia this very day. Syria wants the Golan back. Israel wants guarantees that if the Golan is returned to Syria it will not be used in a future attack on Israel. It is unlikely this meeting between two warring states will end in friendship. Here is a scenario about a way to insure that peace will finally come to this sector of the world. Israel will give the Golan back to Syria. By doing so it will assure the Israeli people that attacks will no longer come from there. Israeli settlers in the Golan and businesses started there will remain and teach the Syrians how they succeeded in making this area productive. In addition, Syria will clean up the mess in Lebanon by driving out the terrorists who use that "client state" of Syria as a base to attack Israel. Lebanon will be given control over its own territory and Syrian troops will be withdrawn. The United States and the UN will monitor the return of the Golan and the neutralization of Lebanon. This picture is incomplete. Knowing the Syrian intransigence in its enmity towards Israel, the Israelis have insured their security by leaking this information: During the blackest nights in the years of their owning the Golan, Israeli miners dug deeply into the earth directly towards Damascus, the Capitol of Syria. The Israelis created a tunnel at the end of which, near Damascus, they installed an atomic device. The control over that device lies in a safe in the Prime Minister's office in Israel's Parliament. Carol's Evaluation: "This is a dumb scenario."
